PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVES

ITBC engages in key partnership initiatives with federal agencies, Tribal nations, and conservation organizations to restore buffalo populations. These collaborations are crucial for sharing resources, expertise, and support, helping to strengthen cultural traditions and promote sustainable land management across Tribal lands.

Bison Conservation Program

Sixty-three animals were transferred in 2012 and 138 in 2014. Today the Fort Peck Tribes conserve 300-400 bison across more than 18,000 acres on their lands.

This initiative will provide additional resources for herd management, improved infrastructure, and land access, ultimately returning buffalo to Tribal lands at an unprecedented scale!

TNC Surplus Partnership

ITBC and partners, including The Nature Conservancy (TNC), are transferring approximately 1,500 buffalo to member Nations through its Surplus Buffalo Program, a network to translocate buffalo safely and efficiently to member Nations.
